City OKs retirement of reinstated officer

Butler City Council approved a retirement and general release agreement with police Sgt. William Mayhugh, who had won reinstatement of his job in February, and Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge 32.

Council members unanimously approved the agreement, but declined to provide a copy of it.

Mayhugh declined to comment on the agreement following Thursday’s council meeting, saying final details had yet to be worked out.

Mayhugh, who was fired following an incident with an inmate in Butler County Prison in February 2017, was awarded reinstatement of his job with back pay through arbitration this year.

He was reinstated and paid $67,244 in back pay, but was using accumulated vacation time and hadn’t returned to duty. He is working as a deputy in the Butler County Sheriff’s office.

Solicitor Tom Breth said a copy of the agreement would not be available until it is signed.
