EAST BRADY, CLARION COUNTY — A meeting for the Towns & Trails Regional Coalition will be held at 7 p.m. May 17 in Room 7 of the Arnold Beabout Community Center in East Brady.

This is the fourth gathering of town residents and business owners along the Redbank Valley and Armstrong Trails with the intent of working together as a region.

Topics on the meeting agenda include attracting new businesses, growing existing ones and tourism promotion.

SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University will graduate 1,700 students at commencement ceremonies May 11 and 12 at Morrow Field House.The university will award its graduate students with degrees at 7 p.m., May 11. No tickets are required for the graduate student commencement.Undergraduates in the College of Health, Environment and Science and the College of Liberal Arts will graduate at 10 a.m., May 12. Doors open at 8:30 a.m.Undergraduates in the College of Business and the College of Education will graduate at 2 p.m., May 12. Doors open at 12:30 p.m.Tickets for all guests, including children, are required for both undergraduate ceremonies.

SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University's Student Government Association is collecting nonperishable food items until May 5 for its SGA Food Pantry, which benefits students.Most students don't qualify for assistance from community food banks because student loans are often counted as income despite that money being committed for tuition, according to a university press release.The university's SGA conducted a survey that reported nearly 40 percent of their students experience either not knowing when they will have access to food or are aware of fellow students who have been insecure about accessing food.Hours of operation for the SGA Food Pantry will be determined in the fall.For more information about the pantry, contact the SGA office at 724-738-2656 or e-mail Scott Vogelgesang at srv1002@sru.edu.

SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University received another vote of confidence this month for its environmental efforts.The university is among 23 institutions to receive Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection's 2018 Governor's Award for Environmental Excellence.SRU was selected for its Healthy Planet, Healthy People Environmental Summer Camp and Community Project Incubator that helps high school teachers and students create environmental stewardship projects.“This main benefit of this program was in creating a ripple effect of environmental awareness, education and stewardship action in the students' local communities,” said Paul Scanlon, the university's director of sustainability.
