Mars to recognize athletes July 4th

Due to scheduling conflicts, a planned parade to honor student athletes from Mars High School has been postponed.

The parade, originally scheduled for Saturday, was being planned to honor the varsity girls basketball team, which earned a state title last month.

Other participants were to include the boys basketball team, which earned WPIAL and Section titles before falling in the state title game, wrestlers and swimmers who advanced to WPIAL and PIAA competition, the school’s marching band, cheerleaders and area first responders.

However, a majority of the students indicated they would be unable to attend the parade due to other commitments, including travel basketball games.

After being notified by the school district of the issue, Mars Mayor Gregg Hartung opted to cancel the parade.

Under the recommendation of school officials, Hartung said the student athletes will be included in the Fourth of July parade, set for 5 p.m. that day.

“We wish the athletes the best in these endeavors and look forward to featuring them in the July 4th celebration,” he said.
