MARS — Nearly a month after the Mars High School varsity girls basketball team claimed a state title, the victory is still fresh in the minds of many in the community.

To further celebrate the accomplishment, as well as those of other student athletes in the district, the borough will hold a parade next week.

According to Mayor Gregg Hartung, the parade will begin at 2 p.m. April 28, with a lineup starting at 1 p.m. on East Railroad Street.

Participants will include the girls basketball team and the boys basketball team, which earned WPIAL and Section titles before falling in the state title game.

Also included will be wrestlers and swimmers from the school who advanced to WPIAL and PIAA competition during the past season, the school’s marching band, cheerleaders and area first responders.

The parade will travel along Marshall Way and turn right onto Grand Avenue.

At the Grand Avenue and Pittsburgh Street intersection, just in front of the spaceship landmark, the participants will stop to allow Ken Shoemaker, “the Voice of the Fightin’ Planets,” to introduce them to the crowd.

Hartung said he expects a large crowd to attend the parade and he is thankful to the community for working together to honor the student athletes.

“I appreciate working with (Superintendent) Dr. Wes Shipley, the school board, athletic department, athletes, their families and all our residents in hosting this special opportunity to affirm young athletes for all the hard work, dedication and their reaching such high levels of accomplishment,” he said. “It is wonderful that we have a town in the district where we can bring people together to celebrate as a community.”
