Snow Ball
This wasn't a normal baseball game.
There were wind-blown infield doubles.
There were two snow delays.
There was a triple into the gap that got lost in a snow squall.
Despite conditions better suited for football and pond hockey than baseball, Butler responded well to the difficult conditions with a 10-0, six-inning win over Vincentian Academy Wednesday night at Kelly Automotive Park.
“When we got here, I told the guys, 'I don't want to hear it's cold,'” said Butler coach Cody Herald. “We've been really trying to beat into their heads that there's things that you can control and things that you can't control. You can't control a call at the plate or on the bases and you can't control the weather. But you can control how you react to it.”
The Golden Tornado (3-0) reacted well.
Starting pitcher Marshall Wheeler was sharp despite a 28-degree thermostat and wind chills in the teens.
The senior right-hander worked four brisk innings, surrendering just one hit — a first-inning double to Kyler Fedko — striking out four and walking just one.
Even Wheeler was taken aback a bit by how crisp he was in his first outing of the season in the frigid weather.
“I was just trying not to do too much and not trying to think too much,” Wheeler said. “And definitely not focusing on the weather. Like coach said, I pretended it was 70 and sunny out.”
And he pitched like it, showing command of his fastball and curveball to get weak fly balls and groundouts.
“It was a little hard at first in the cold because you get stiff,” Wheeler said. “But once you get into a rhythm you can get going.”
Butler's offense got going early and often.
The Tornado scored a pair of runs in the first inning on a wild pitch and throwing error and then added two more in the bottom of the second inning on RBI singles by Nathan Stutz and Ryan Lynn.
That's when the weather began to turn and announcer Jay Miranda broke out the Christmas music.
Lucas doubled on an infield pop-up in the third inning that got blown around in the wind and scored on a RBI single by Jake Slomers.
In the fourth, Connor Ollio hit a rope into the left-center gap that no one saw amid a heavy snow squall. That prompted the umpires to call the first of two snow delays.
Ollio later scored after play resumed on a sacrifice fly by Brandon Fleeger for a 6-0 Butler lead.
“It was a cool sight to see everyone on the field with the snow falling,” Herald said. “It's fun to play in stuff like this that no one else plays like this. I remember playing in weather like this when I was in college (at Seton Hill).”
Nash Bryan relieved Wheeler to start the fifth inning and struck out three.
Ollio finished off Vincentian, overcoming a leadoff walk to shut down the Royals in the sixth.
In the bottom half on the inning, a parade of pinch hitters led the way for the Golden Tornado.
Jake Keene and John Herold both delivered RBI doubles to key a four-run sixth that triggered the 10-run mercy rule.
“We've really been on everyone that if you're not in the game, you still need to be involved in case your number is called,” Herald said. “I thought all the guys who came off the bench into the game were ready because they were involved in every pitch.”
Butler will play Armstrong at 7 p.m. Friday at Kelly Automotive Park.
The weather forecast calls for similar conditions as Wednesday.
Herald said his team was desperate to play a game again after being stuck practicing in a gym for the better part of two weeks.
“I told our athletic director (Bill Mylan) that we can't be in the gym any longer,” Herald said. “It eventually gets old. For them to come out and play and react the way they did, it was nice to see.
“Friday is probably going to be the same exact thing,” Herald said, smiling. “So, we'll probably be out here.”
