Oberg expands capabilities by acquiring Illinois firm
BUFFALO TWP — Oberg Industries has acquired an Illinois-based engineering firm in a move that will expand the company’s worldwide employees and is expected to boost its combined sales to more than $150 million by the end of the year.
Oberg, a manufacturer of precision machined and stamped components, announced the acquisition of X-L Engineering Corp. in early March.
X-L is a family-owned, precision manufacturing business based in Niles, Ill., that employs more than 90 people and focuses primarily on the medical device and aerospace markets, according to a news release announcing the deal. The organization will become an extension of Oberg Medical and will be rebranded as Oberg Medical — XL Division, with facilities in Niles and Elk Grove Village, Ill.
David Bonvenuto, Oberg’s CEO, called the company’s acquisition of X-L a function of the quality and complexity of its work.
Oberg specializes in the production of advanced, precision-machined or stamped metal components and precision tooling. X-L’s capabilities include grinding, turning, milling, wire EDM, Swiss machining and gun drilling, and are expected to enhance Oberg’s offerings and capabilities, especially with medical device outsourcing.
“We believe both Oberg’s and X-L’s customer partners will benefit from our consolidated ability to provide enhanced manufacturing capacity in core areas of our business while now having new manufacturing capabilities in house that were previously limited in capacity or outsourced,” Bonvenuto said in a news release.
The deal will bring the number of Oberg employees to more than 900 worldwide.
