Butler volleyball wins 15-team Norwin tourney

Butler's boys volleyball team won the 15-team Norwin Tournament Saturday, defeating Bethel Park 25-16 in the championship match.

The Golden Toprnado defeated Baldwin and Moon in bracket play, then defeated the four other bracket winners — Hempfield, Norwin, Bethel Park and Pine-Richland — to move into the single-elimination portion of the tourney.

Butler stopped Seton-La Salle 25-10 in the quarterfinals and Hempfield 25-14 in the semifinal round before downing the Black Hawks for the title.

Nash Bryan had 45 kills to lead the Tornado. Cody Schnur added 20, Conner Chapla 13 and Andrew Chwalik 10.

Dan Kline had 25 passes and 10 digs, Tyler Rankin 71 assists and Bryan 10 aces.

Butler hosts North Hills Tuesday night.

In Friday action:

The Mars baseball team began the 2018 season with a split in South Carolina.

In the second game of a doubleheader, Jack Anderson singled, doubled and collected three RBI in a 10-0, five-inning victory over Germantown Academy.

Tyler Kowalkowski added a pair of singles and two RBI and Will Bednar earned the pitching win with eight strikeouts in 4.1 innings pitched.

Despite a combined 16 strikeouts from brothers Frank and Joe Craska, Mars dropped its first game, 3-1 to Spring-Ford.

Anthony Michalski singled twice and drove in a run for the Planets.

Girls Lacrosse

Eliza Dothan tallied four goals, but Butler opened the season with a 15-8 loss to visiting Hampton.

Karolyn Miller and Kate Quinlan both added two goals for Butler.

Boys Volleyball

Nash Bryan had 12 kills and Cody Schnur added seven as Butler opened its season with a 25-10, 25-14, 25-11 home victory over Latrobe.

Dan Kline contributed seven digs, Tyler Rankin 28 assists. Butler will play in the Norwin tournament Saturday before hosting North Hills Tuesday.
