FOXBURG — The Allegheny-Clarion Valley School District is planning registration April 5 and 6 for new students for the 2018-19 school year.

To be eligible to attend kindergarten, a student must be 5 years old before July 1, 2018. To enter first grade, a student must be 6.

Children who do not have the necessary immunizations should check with their family physicians or the Pennsylvania State Health Center to make arrangements to get them.

Information packets have been mailed to families that have registered. Those who registered, but did not receive a packet or have not filled out a registration, should call the elementary office at 724-659-3555.

[naviga:h3]Group hike planned along rail trail[/naviga:h3]

FREEPORT — A group hike along a section of the Butler-Freeport Community Trail will be held at 9 a.m. April 7.

The hike will start at the Laneville trailhead at 9 a.m. near the gate and proceed four miles to Monroe Road.

The hike leader will share information and history on that section of the trail.

Leashed dogs are welcome, and participants should take their own water.

A lunch break at a cafe in Freeport will be included based on participation.

The April 7 hike is the first in a series of hikes along the trail that will be held throughout the spring and summer.

[naviga:h3]Zelienople council OKs church run[/naviga:h3]

ZELIENOPLE — Borough council approved the Harmony-Zelienople United Methodist Church GLOW run, a 5K and 1 mile walk that will begin at 7:30 p.m. May 12, across Harmony and Zelienople boroughs. Harmony borough also has given approval for the event. The council also approved a motion to apply to PennDOT for a special events permit on behalf of the American Legion so it can hold its annual Memorial Day Service. The service will be from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. March 28.

[naviga:h3]DUI task force at work for holiday[/naviga:h3]

Motorists are being advised not to press their luck with the approaching St. Patrick’s Day holiday by drinking and getting behind the wheel of a car.

The Butler County DUI Task Force said it will hold sobriety checkpoints or roving patrols throughout the county during the holiday.

St. Patrick’s Day is Saturday.

Police, who did not disclose specific locations in advance, remind everyone to drink responsibly and assign a designated driver or make alternate arrangements to get home.
