Two consumer protection bills sponsored by state Rep. Brian Ellis, R-11th, were approved by the state house Tuesday.

Both bills deal with data breaches.

House Bill 1846 would require any business or agency, including school districts and county and municipal governments, to provide a notice to residents whenever there is a breach of security.

House Bill 1847, introduced by state Rep. Mike Driscoll, D-Philadelphia, would waive the credit freeze fee, which is up to $10, and in the event of a data breach, customers would get three years of free credit monitoring.

An estimated 5 million Pennsylvanians had their personal information compromised in a data breach at Equifax last year.

“We hope another breach doesn’t occur, but if it does, we want to make sure Pennsylvanians are safeguarded,” Ellis said in a news release.

Both bills will now go to the full state Senate.
