Intersection project to start next week
ADAMS TWP — After years of planning, a two-year road construction project will get under way next week in Adams Township.
A nearly $8 million project is set to begin March 15 at the intersection of Route 228 and Pittsburgh Road in the township. According to information provided by PennDOT, the project includes the construction of turn lanes, signal improvements, drainage upgrades and the construction of a new box culvert.
Signage was in place Tuesday, though it remained covered by black tarps. Electronic signs on each side of Route 228 indicated the work will begin March 15, and take place during nighttime hours from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Clearing and grubbing for utility work is also ongoing.
According to PennDOT officials, traffic at the Pittsburgh Street intersection will be restricted to one lane and controlled by flaggers as crews mill and place temporary pavement on the eastbound shoulder. This work will allow for a traffic shift to accommodate work on the westbound shoulder.
Once paving is completed, a temporary barrier will be put in place and the westbound shoulder will be closed.
Milling and paving work will take place March 16, with the temporary barriers put in place on March 19 and 20. At the same time, work will be ongoing on the box culvert.
The work will be done by Gulisek Construction and is expected to be completed by May 2020. The project is expected to cost $7,992,930.
“This intersection safety and mobility improvement project will enhance travel on the vital Route 228 corridor in Butler County,” Gov. Tom Wolf said. “All modes of transportation on Route 228 will be enhanced by through lanes in each direction as well as dedicated left and right turn lanes and bike lanes.”
