“Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,” based on the 1988 MGM film, takes us to the French Riviera for high jinks and hilarity.
This comedy features a delightfully jazzy score by David Yazbek (“The Band's Visit”) and was nominated for 11 Tony Awards in 2005, with Norbert Leo Butz (Freddy Benson) taking home the Tony for Best Actor.
Lawrence Jameson (Maxwell McAuley) makes his lavish living by talking rich ladies out of their money. Freddy Benson (Brecken Farrell) more humbly swindles women by waking their compassion with fabricated stories about his grandmother's failing health.
After meeting on a train, they attempt to work together, only to find that this small French town isn't big enough for the two of them. They agree on a settlement: the first one to extract $50,000 from a young female target, heiress, Christine Colgate (Sammy Jo Barnes), wins, and the other must leave town.
In the meantime, Andre (Brady Collins), the police chief who helps Lawrence in his scheming, falls in love with one of Lawrence's marks, a wealthy socialite named Muriel Eubanks (Bronwyn Wain).
A battle of cons ensues that will keep audiences laughing.
Jennifer Bronder is the producer/director, and Diane Beckstead is the vocal director. Monica Traggia is the choreographer. Ricardo Hayden Jr. is the orchestra director. David Haines is the technical director, Nance Conlon, the costume designer and constructor and Jeannette Adams, the artistic designer.
Scott Emmel is the sound and lighting supervisor while Stephanie Kaltenbaugh, Mackenzie Mead and Luke Wood are the student directors.
