Road closure coming in June

CRANBERRY TWP — A part of North Boundary Road will be closed for a month this summer while work is completed.

The $1 million project will reconstruct North Boundary Road from Pinehurst Drive to Franklin Road. The closure is not scheduled yet, but will likely start after June 8 so it does not overlap with Seneca Valley School District's school year, said Jason Kratsas, director of engineering and environmental services for the township.

Cranberry Township supervisors will vote Thursday to authorize the project to be bid in March. A timeframe for the project will be established after a bid is awarded to a contractor in April.

The closure will not affect Pinehurst residents or residents of the two homes that are close to the Franklin Road intersection, said Tim Zinkham, manager of engineering for the township. Preliminary work may start before the road is closed.

The project is aimed at improving the vertical geometry of the road by shaving off some hilltops and filling in some dips, Zinkham said, because it is “so much of a roller-coaster ride from Pinehurst to Franklin.”

At the same time, a 5-foot paved shoulder will be added on each side of the road in that section. The project will also reconstruct the intersection of North Boundary and Franklin roads to make it a true 90-degree angle to improve sight lights for drivers, Zinkham said.

Traffic islands will be added at the entrance to the Pinehurst residential development to slow traffic and make it safer for pedestrians to cross the road to the North Boundary Park.

“There's a refuge island,” Zinkham said. “As you're leaving Pinehurst, you'll only have to cross one lane at a time to get to North Boundary.”

Kratsas said they've been working closely with the Pinehurst homeowners association on the project.
