SRU basketball nipped on road

Rock men settle for 3rd in West with 72-68 loss

ERIE — Foul trouble plagued Slippery Rock University in a regular season-closing 72-68 men’s basketball loss at Gannon Saturday.

The Rock (20-8, 14-8) had three starters sit for most of the first half due to foul problems. Leading scorer Micah Till played just 25 minutes in the game, but still tallied 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Till recorded his 20th double-double of the season. He has 338 rebounds this season, breaking the single-season school record of 334 set by Connie Palumbo in 1956-57.

The loss gives SRU the No. 3 seed in the PSAC West for the conference tournament. The Rock hosts Mercyhurst at 7 p.m. Monday, with the winner going to Erie to face Gannon Wednesday night.

Gannon (20-8, 16-6) is 13-1 at the Hammernill Center this season and only .500 (7-7) away from home.

SRU had a one-point lead and the ball with less than a minute to play. The Rock missed a shot with 48 seconds left and Gannon converted an offensive rebound for a 69-68 lead with 12 seconds left.

The Rock then turned the ball over and the Golden Knights converted a three-point play at the other end to account for the final score.

Brandon Simmons had 13 points and seven rebounds, Bruce Spruell and Khyree Wooten 12 points each.

Zay Jackson had 25 points for Gannon while Evan Phoenix added 15.

Women’s Basketball

The Rock (12-15, 10-12)closed its regular season with a 60-50 loss at Gannon. SRU will travel to California (Pa.) for as first-round PSAC Tournament game at 7 p.m. Monday.

Gannon (16-12, 13-9) used a 21-4 run over a 10-minute stretch of the third quarter to take control of the game.

Morgan Henderson scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for The Rock. Chelsea Rourke scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Gannon.

Baseball

SRU swept a Saturday doubleheader from West Liberty (W.Va.) in Holly Springs, N.C., winning 14-4 and 3-1.

Ryan Tapp had 12 strikeouts in six innings in winning the first game. Luca Fuscardo went 4-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored, Kyle Wise 2-for-3 with a homer and Tyler Walters homered and collected two RBI.

Walters is four home runs shy of breaking SRU’s career record of 40. He needs eight homers to snap the PSAC’s all-time mark.

Grove City High graduate Matt Gordon allowed two hits over five innings for the win in the nightcap. Butler graduate Wyatt Daugherty notched his first save with two scoreless innings.

Joe Campagna had two singles and Abraham Mow a two-run single for SRU.

Christian Porterfield belted three home runs Sunday to help The Rock (3-1 defeat Shippensburg, 15-8. One of his homers was a grand slam and he had seven RBI on the day.

Matt Mandes hit two homers and drove in three runs. Fuscardo and Frankie Jezioro had three hits each.

Chris Anastas got the win on the mound.

Indoor Track

SRU placed second in the men’s and women’s division at the PSAC Championships over the weekend.

The Rock’s Steven Girgash won the hepthathlon with 4,969 points. Anderson Novalin won the shot put with a heave of 17.11 meters.

Women’s Lacrosse

SRU opened its season with a dominant 19-1 win over West Virginia Wesleyan Sunday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

The game marked the debut of new head coach Kelsey Van Alstyne.

Jasey Sanders scored four goals for The Rock while Kelly Muenster added three. Tia Torchia had two goals and two assists, Bre Vodde two goals.
