JEFFERSON TWP — While the superintendent of South Butler County School District would not confirm what the exact issues were, he did say the state police had been called to the school district in the last several days.

“We've had several issues this past week and have spoken with the state police,” Superintendent David Foley said.

He would not divulge in what school the incidents occurred, the grade level or genders of the students involved or whether police have made any arrests.

Foley did say no classes were canceled because of the incidents.

“The students have been disciplined accordingly,” Foley said.

Foley sent a letter on Wednesday to all school families that initially mentions the Parkland, Florida, school shooting in which 17 people were killed on Feb. 14.

Foley reiterated the district's commitment to safety in the letter and listed websites where upset students could find relief.

The three websites listed by Foley are the American Psychological Association, a link to a Childrens Hospital of Pittsburgh program dealing with school violence, and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

Foley included in the letter the district's 10-year commitment to school safety and listed various safety precautions in the district, including its captured entrances, school police officer presence and staff safety training.

Foley suggested that parents continue to be attentive.

“Reviewing your child's belongings is an important proactive step for avoiding issues throughout the school day,” Foley's letter reads. “We will continue refining safety procedures to support all stakeholders of the South Butler County School District.”
