Man sentenced in sexual assault case
A Butler man will continue to be held in Butler County Prison for the next three months, after being sentenced in Butler County Court on charges of sexually assaulting two minors.
Ronald Bombara, 51, was sentenced to 1½ to 3 years in prison by Judge Thomas Doerr. He was given time served credit for 15 months, and will remain held for the remaining three months before he is paroled.
His parole will be followed by 2 years of county probation, and he will be required to register as a sexual offender for 25 years as well as pay for court costs.
Bombara's attorney, Joseph Nash, asked that the sentence be served in the county facility because of Bombara's health problems, communications issues as he is deaf, and that Bombara had no criminal history before this incident. Two American Sign Language interpreters were present during the proceeding, translating for Bombara.
“He has had 15 months in jail to reflect on this,” Nash said. “He related to me how deeply sorry he was for this.”
Nash said one of the two victims was also applying for a protection from abuse order, which Bombara had agreed to, and which was later approved Thursday.
“There will be many layers of protection for the victims when he is paroled,” he said, “He has no desire to have any contact with the victims.”
Bombara pleaded guilty Nov. 7 to one consolidated count of felony unlawful contact with a minor and one consolidated count of misdemeanor indecent assault of a person less than 13 years old.
He was initially charged with felony aggravated indecent assault of a person less than 13 years old, two counts each of felony unlawful contact with a minor, corruption of minors, misdemeanor indecent assault and indecent exposure after an incident Sept. 25, 2016, in Clay Township. The remaining charges were dismissed as part of the plea agreement.
The affidavit of probable cause states that two minor victims under the age of 13 told police that Bombara sexually assaulted them.
One victim then reported that he had them to sit down, and motioned with his finger over his lip, indicating they should not tell anyone.
One girl reported that she tried to stop him, but he pushed her hand away, the document states.
