ADAMS TWP — Adams Township is the safest place in Pennsylvania this year, according to the National Council for Home Safety and Security.

Adams was the only municipality from Butler County to make the organization's top 10 list of “Safest cities” in Pennsylvania, which was released Wednesday.

The cities were ranked based on the number of reported violent crimes and property crimes. The process to identify the safest cities involved reviewing FBI Uniform Crime Report statistics, population data and internal research, according to a release from the council.

Cities that failed to submit a complete crime report to the FBI and cities with populations under 10,000 were not considered.

With a population of 13,531, Adams had 0.37 violent crimes per 1,000 residents, according to the council's data from 2016. That is six times less than the state average. There were five violent crimes and 46 property crimes in 2016 in the township.

Cranberry Township was 86 on the list and Butler Township was 155 on the list.

Also on the top 10 list from Western Pennsylvania are South Fayette Township and Franklin Park in Allegheny County and Penn Township in Westmoreland County.

The National Council for Home Safety and Security is a national trade association of home security professionals. The council advocates for safe communities and home safety with a strong focus on community involvement.
