[naviga:h3]BC3 men’s hoops downed by WCC[/naviga:h3]

BUTLER TWP — Joel Stutz scored 33 points, but the Butler County Community College men’s basketball team dropped a 98-94 decision to Westmoreland Community College Thursday night.

The Pioneers (2-18, 1-3) had a 47-34 halftime lead. Brendan Record scored 28 points, Jace Stutz 13.

The Pioneer women (4-15, 2-1) dropped a 98-57 decision despite 26 points and 17 rebounds from Mackenzie Craig.

[naviga:h3]SV, Mars wrestling in team playoffs[/naviga:h3]

The Seneca Valley and Mars wrestling teams will both be involved in the WPIAL Class AAA team tournament.

Mars, which placed fourth in Section 3, will face Thomas Jefferson in a first-round match at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Franklin Regional High School.

Seneca Valley, the Section 3 champion, will host the winner of the Franklin Regional/Moon match at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

[naviga:h3]Mitchell to enter Gannon HOF[/naviga:h3]

ERIE — Butler graduate and former Gannon University wrestling great Lyneil Mitchell is being inducted into the Gannon University Athletics Hall of Fame Saturday night.

The 2003 Gannon graduate is one of only two Golden Knight wrestlers to advance to a national championship match. He finished second nationally in 2003.

A two-time All-American, Mitchell was 98-32 in his collegiate career, including 29-2 as a junior and 33-2 as a senior. He was also a two-time Academic All-American.

[naviga:h3]GCC adding 3 swimmers to HOF[/naviga:h3]

GROVE CITY — Grove City College is adding three swimmers to the College’s Swimming and Diving Hall of Fame in conjunction with Saturday’s meet against Washington & Jefferson.

Jim Cordray (1968 graduate) set the school record in the 50 freestyle and contributed to three school relay records. He helped the Wolverines win four successive Penn-Ohio championships.

Sarah Erdos Bocian (2002) became GCC’s first female sprinter to reach the NCAA Championships, qualifying for the 50, 100 and 200 freestyles in 1999. She was a four-year Presidents’ Athletic Conference champion in those three events.

Sarah Wells (2011) was a six-time NCAA Division III All-American, won five individual PAC titles and contributed to 10 PAC titles in relay events.

[naviga:h3]Pirates, Marlins under scrutiny[/naviga:h3]

NEW YORK — Concerned after the Miami Marlins and Pittsburgh Pirates cut major league payroll, the baseball players’ association has taken the first step toward trying to force changes in the clubs’ behavior.

The union said it expressed concern to Major League Baseball that the teams are not spending revenue-sharing proceeds to improve play. The commissioner’s office responded by saying it is not worried about any violations.

The Pirates traded longtime franchise face Andrew McCutchen and ace pitcher Gerrit Cole.
