Knoch's Greb bows in PIAA tennis singles final
Knoch tennis star Laura Greb fell short of winning a PIAA singles title.
But considering she is just a freshman, the sky seems to be the limit over the next three years.
Greb lost to Bethlehem Catholic’s Brenna Magliochetti in Saturday’s Class AA title match, 2-6, 6-7, at the Hershey Racquet Club.
It was by far the stiffest test in the tournament for Magliochetti, who defeated her previous three opponents by a combined score of 36-4.
“I thought Laura did extremely well,” said Knoch coach Nancy Conlon. “For a freshman, she handled the pressure well and really came out strong in the second set. It was just a little too late. She (Magliochetti) is just a phenomenal player.”
Greb’s teammate, freshman Brooke Bauer, won a first-round match Friday over Wyoming’s Brianna Pizzano, but lost in the quarterfinals to Loyalsock’s Katie Savidge.
Greb and Bauer were the Knights’ No. 1 and 2 singles players during the regular season. Both play club tennis year round.
Grove City senior Emily Gordon, who entered the event as the defending state champion, defeated Camp Hill’s Ines Fedriani in first-round play, but lost in the quarterfinals to Gwynedd Mercy’s Genevieve Wurtz.
Greb then defeated Wurtz in the semifinals, 6-4, 6-4.
