KC girls claim 6th straight title
BROCKWAY — Tracy Dailey knew her team's potent attack gave it an advantage against Clearfield.
Even when the Bison managed to keep the Gremlins off the scoreboard for the first 32 minutes, she was confident her front line would break through.
Senior forward Haley Scherer rewarded that patience. In the 33rd minute, she beat Bison goalkeeper, Hayley Moore, to the ball 20 yards from the net and scored the first goal in a 3-0 KC victory in Tuesday's District 9 Class AA girls soccer title game at Frank Varischetti Field.
“When you have the ball in the other team's end almost the entire first half, but still haven't scored, you get nervous because all it takes is one trip the other way and you can be down 1-0,” said Dailey. “We just needed to play our game. Eventually, with Scherer and (Hannah) Knoll going to the goal, I thought it was a matter of time before we scored.
“It's hard coming off almost two weeks without playing,” she added. “You go from playing three games every week to nothing.”
It is the Gremlins' sixth consecutive district title and their 20th crown in 23 years. Karns City also defeated Clearfield in last year's final, 3-0.
“We were a little worried coming in because we watched film on them and it looked like they had improved since last year,” said Scherer of the Bison. “We knew they were going to pack it in and just try to clear it out from the back.”
The field was tilted in favor of the Gremlins (12-5-1) for much of the first half, thanks in large part to forwards Brooke Stahlman and Scherer and midfielder Knoll. But Moore made four saves prior to Scherer's goal and Bison defenders got in the way of a bevy of shots and passes.
The Bison (10-9) finally showed life on offense late in the first half. Forwards Grace Johnson and Mickey Landsberry both unloaded shots from 25 yards, but they both went wide of the net.
Clearfield missed an opportunity to tie the game in the 67th minute. Following the team's first of two corner kicks in the game, Alayna Ryan rose above the crowd of players in front of Karns City goalkeeper Cambree Powers and sent a header over the crossbar.
Less than three minutes later, Knoll scored to give the Gremlins a 2-0 edge and Scherer found the net for the second time on a breakaway in the 74th minute.
Scherer has now been part of four district titles, but she said receiving the championship trophy never gets old.
“It's something we hope for every year,” she said, “but we can't be too sure of it.”
It is the final district crown for Karns City's nine seniors.
“It's bitter-sweet for me,” said Dailey, “but I told the players before the game that tradition never graduates. The younger girls are ready to carry that on.”
In the first round of the state playoffs on Tuesday, Karns City will face the loser of Saturday's WPIAL title game between Freedom and Waynesburg.
