Grove City nets 24-7 football win

GROVE CITY — Sophomore running back Wesley Schools carried 35 times for 187 yards and three touchdowns Saturday as the Grove City College football team defeated Geneva, 24-7, at Thorn Field.

Schools scored on a pair of 1-yard runs and a 5-yard scamper on a rain-soaked day for the Wolverines (3-5, 3-3), who close out their home schedule at 1:30 p.m. Saturday against Bethany.

Quarterback Randall Labrie had the other touchdown on a 16-yard run.

Karns City graduate and Wolverine junior linebacker Ethan Conto led the team with 13 tackles and a forced fumble. Grove City’s defense forced three turnovers and had four sacks.

Volleyball

Butler County Community College dropped a tight 3-2 match to top-seeded Howard in the Region XX Tournament finals Sunday at the BC3 Fieldhouse.

Brittney Bianco had 49 assists, seven kills and 20 digs in the 25-21, 21-25, 25-17, 26-28, 15-13 loss. Emily Magusiak added 11 kills and 28 digs, Mackenzie Craig 14 kills, and Autumn Rodgers 11 kills in the loss.

Bianco, Craig and Magusiak made the all-tournament team.

Bianco had 26 assists as the Pioneers (18-6) reached the Region XX tourney finals with a 25-10, 25-14, 25-17 win over Penn Highlands Saturday.

Magusiak had eight kills and 13 digs, Autumn Rodgers seven kills and Kelsey Minnich six aces.

Field hockey

Slippery Rock dropped its final regular season game of the year, 3-2, to No. 3 Millersville on the road.

The Rock (10-8, 5-5) produced its first winning season since 1998 and reached 10 wins for the first time since 1988. Courtney Page and Brittany Morgan scored SRU’s goals.

SRU made the PSAC Tournament as the No. 6 seed and will play at No. 3 seed East Stroudsburg at 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Cross Country

Grove City won its first Presidents’ Athletic Conference championship since 2009. The Wolverines’ Drew Thibault placed second overall in 25 minutes, 29.84 seconds. All five of GC’s scoring runners finished in the top 23.

Women’s Soccer

Slippery Rock (10-5-2, 10-4-2) is in the PSAC Tournament as the No. 6 seed. The Rock plays at No. 3 seed East Stroudsburg at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Grove City (`14-4, 8-1) earned the No. 2 seed in the Presidents Athletic Conference tourney and will host No. 3 Washington & Jefferson (12-5-1, 7-2) at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Men’s Soccer

Grove City (10-4-4, 6-1-1) qualified for the PAC tournament as the third seed and will play at second-seeded Geneva (13-3-2, 6-1-1) Wednesday night.
