Warriors earn OT victory
CHERRY TWP — Chance Nagy lofted a fourth-down pass into the back of the end zone. Hunter Fitzingo made a diving catch. Touchdown, Warriors.
The tying touchdown.
Steven Fawcett came on to kick the tie-breaking extra point, giving the Warriors a comeback 35-34 win over Redbank Valley in double overtime.
“At first, I couldn't put it into words,” Warriors head coach Jon McCune said, referring to the up and down emotional game. “Then I told the seniors this was their last game and what a way to end it.”
The game-winning heroics were set up after the Bulldogs scored on their possession in the second overtime and Clint Thurston's PAT attempt sailed wide left to keep the margin at six points heading into the Warriors' possession.
The comeback started for the Warriors midway through the third quarter after they found themselves trailing 21-7 after a 94-yard touchdown run by Redbank Valley quarterback Keaton Kahle.
The Warriors' ensuing possession began at their 49-yard line. Fourteenplays later, Wyatt Geibel, who caught eight passes, scored on a 2-yard pass from Nagy to cut the lead in half with 2:30 remaining in the third quarter.
The Moniteau defense stepped up in the fourth quarter, forcing a fumble, punt and an interception on Redbank Valley's three possessions in the period.
The Warrior offense continued to move the ball, and with 2:28 remaining in regulation, Nagy hit Nick Martino with a 30-yard touchdown pass to tie the game.
Wyatt ensured that the game went into overtime, as he intercepted a Kahle pass inside the 20-yard line with less than one minute to go in regulation.
Both teams scored a touchdown and extra point in the first overtime period, sending the game to double overtime.
Fitzingo also caught a 6-yard touchdown pass from Nagy, who completed 21 of 41 passes for 218 yards in the game.
“I'm a passing guy,” McCune said. “Once (Manny) McLean got hurt and had to go out, we had to mix it up a little more. They (Redbank Valley) were giving us the pass, so you have to take what they give you.”
Kahle led the Bulldogs in passing and rushing, as he threw for 149 and ran for 133. Thurston, who came into the game with eight 100-yard rushing games on the season, was held to just 82 yards on the ground.
Nagy went over 1,000 yards passing for the season with a completion in the second quarter.
“This game summed up our whole season,” McCune said. “We got up early, had some injuries, and fought back. This year was tough with the amount of players we had, but we're excited going into next year.”
