EVANS CITY — Police say a pedestrian who was hit by a vehicle on West Main Street in front of the Evans City School on Thursday intentionally walked out into traffic.

Evans City Police Chief Joe McCombs said the department will not publicly identify the man, who was described as in his early to mid-20s by emergency responders from the Evans City Volunteer Fire Department.

McCombs said the incident, which occurred at about 3 p.m. Thursday, was caused by “a mental health issue,” and added that he “highly doubts” the department will file any charges in the case.

“It was an intentional act,” McCombs said. “He meant to walk out (in the street) and get run over.”

The nature and extent of the pedestrian's injuries remained unclear on Friday. McCombs said the man was taken to an trauma center at Allegheny General Hospital following the crash. Bicehouse said first responders at the scene described his injuries as minor before he was taken to the hospital.

A spokeswoman for Seneca Valley School District said the pedestrian was not a student or employee at the district.
