Tornado feeling motivated

Shaler ended 34-game skid at Butler in 2015, bringing 19-game slide to town Friday night

This is one in a series of previews of this Friday night's high school football games.BUTLER TWP — Shaler will long remember its last trip to Art Bernardi Stadium.Butler football coach Rob Densmore doesn't want his team to forget it.“If our kids don't recall it, I'll remind them of it,” Densmore said. “That has to serve as motivation for us.”The Titans (0-5, 0-3) bring a 19-game losing streak into Butler Friday night when they face the Golden Tornado (1-3, 0-3). They came to town two years ago saddled with a 34-game skid.Shaler won that game, 30-20.“Their kids were excited with the win and were celebrating, that's understandable,” Densmore said. “Some of their coaches did some things after the game that were inappropriate.“Our team needs to remember that. I told them at the time to remember it and do something about it next time they come here.”Shaler has a new coaching staff now, headed by first-year head coach Jim Ryan.“Their current staff wasn't there then and I have nothing against that group at all,” Densmore emphasized. “But that memory is still there.”Shaler's win at Butler in 2015 is one of only two the Titans have mustered in their last 55 games. The other was a 14-9 triumph over Fox Chapel that year.Butler switched leading rusher and receiver Luke Michalek to quarterback last week and will likely stay with that approach. Previous quarterback Brandon Fleeger is now at running back.“As head coach, my No. 1 job is to give us our best chance to compete against these other teams,” Densmore said. “We weren't real smooth with that offense last week, but it was only in for four days.“Luke has the ability to throw the football. He has to adapt to reading defenses and grow more comfortable at that position.”Michalek completed seven of 11 passes for 31 yards in Friday's 29-7 lossto North Allegheny. He rushed for 135 yards in the game.Michalek has 799 all-purpose yards this season, including 343 yards and four touchdowns rushing. The Tornado do not have another player with as many as 100 all-purpose yards.“It's still important for us to get more people into the mix,” Densmore said. “We have to be able to make some plays in the passing game.“We're going to try to run the ball against every team we play. Shaler plays a five-man front against everybody and teams have hurt them in the passing game. That's not one of our strengths right now, but if we can't run the ball against that defense, we better be able to throw it.”Densmore said Shaler's defensive ends “are theiir best players. They're physical and they've been playing very well.”The Titans have been outscored 201-38 so far this season and are coming off losses of 55-7 to North Allegheny and 34-7 to Penn Hills.Quarterback Hunter Zukowski has thrown for 374 yards, one touchdown and five interceptions. Butler has yet to throw a TD pass in 2017.Brian Colarusso is Shaler's leading receiver with eight catches for 211 yards. Joey Kremer has 46 carries for 230 yards.Defensively, John Michalek paces Butler with 13 solo tackles. Luke Michalek and Davyon Coleman have 12 each, Colton Frost 11.Densmore also lauded the play of Darin Skidmore, who played well after being inserted at defensive end last week.“He's definitely earned his way into the mix,” the coach said.Butler is 20-17-1 all-time against the Titans, including a 34-16 win at Shaler last year.Shaler coach Ryan could not be reached for comment.
