A Butler man was sentenced to probation in two assault cases in Butler County Court on Thursday.

Darryn A. John, 19, was sentenced to a total of 36 months probation by county Judge Timothy McCune, after previously pleading guilty to two misdemeanor counts of simple assault on Aug. 15.

He also was ordered to pay $200 in fines, perform 100 hours of community service, and participate in anger management or domestic violence counseling.

John was initially charged with misdemeanor simple assault, intimidating a witness and summary harassment after an incident on April 24. The intimidating witness charge was later withdrawn at the magisterial district court level.

Bail was set at $5,000, and posted the following day.

The second case stems from an incident on Route 8 on June 1, when Penn Township police charged with him with misdemeanor simple assault, harassment and recklessly endangering another person.

Police said John assaulted a former girlfriend in a vehicle following an argument.

She told police that while hitting her, the defendant nearly lost control of the car, causing a wreck. Also in the vehicle was the woman's 1-year-old child and her sister.

This violated a protection from abuse order, police said.

He was held in Butler County Prison on $50,000 bail, which was later changed to $10,000.
