Up-tempo Moniteau set for home debut

This is one in a series of previews of Butler County area high school football games this Friday

CHERRY TWP — Jon McCune wants his up-tempo offense to be even more up-tempo.

The first-year Moniteau football coach's attack had a successful unveiling last week in a 21-6 road win over St. Marys.

But McCune wants to see it ratchet up a few notches when Moniteau hosts Punxsutawney (0-2) at 7 p.m. Friday.

“I think we need to go a little faster,” McCune said. “With an up-tempo offense, you'll have that sometimes.”

McCune installed the offense this summer. While it looks on the surface to be complicated, the coach stressed it really isn't.

“I'm not really surprised we picked it up so quickly,” McCune said. “It's a simple system, really. We just have to be a little faster and have a little more confidence in what we're doing.”

Chance Nagy and Wyatt Geibel appear to have plenty of confidence in the attack.

Nagy, a junior quarterback, was 11-of-19 passing for 173 yards and a touchdown. Geibel, a senior wide receiver, caught seven passes for 134 yards and also sprung Cody Wise for a long touchdown run with a key block.

“Wyatt's a disciplined route runner,” McCune said. “He's also an excellent blocker. On defense, he recovered a fumble. All-around, he plays hard.”

Wise finished with 74 yards rushing on just six carries. Manny McLean added 62 yards on 13 carries for the Warriors in last week's win over St. Marys.

While McCune was pleased with his offensive effort, he was ecstatic about the play of his defense.

“Defensively, we looked great,” McCune said. “We just need to keep doing what we're doing.”

Punxsutawney has struggled so far this season running the football with only 143 yards on the ground in two games.

The Chucks are coming off a 43-0 blanking at the hands of Clarion after opening up the season in Week Zero with a 22-21 setback against Penns Valley.

“They run a lot of different stuff on offense,” McCune said. “What we've focused on this week is what they run the best. There's talent there and they're a bigger school, so we have to come focused.”

It's also Moniteau's home opener, which adds a bit of adrenaline to an already pumped-up team.

“It's exciting and the guys are excited,” McCune said. “I've had a good feeling all week. But our first home game, I've been stressing to the guys we have to disciplined. It's a league opponent and we just want to be 1-0 every week.”
