Volleyball, track the path for Mirialakis

1995 Knoch graduate joins school's sports Hall of Fame Friday

This is the fifth in a series of six articles profiling the 2017 Knoch High School Sports Hall of Fame inductees.AUSTIN, Texas — Amy McCall Mirialakis figured her athletic future was in basketball.“That was the sport I started playing first,” the 1995 Knoch graduate recalled. “I began basketball in fourth grade. That's the sport I thought I'd eventually get a scholarship in.”While she was a standout basketball player, it was two other sports — volleyball and track and field — that brought collegiate fame and a pair of Hall of Fame inductions into her life.Mirialakis will be one of six inductees entering the Knoch High School Sports Hall of Fame Friday. They will all be honored at a ceremony prior to the Knights' home football game with West Mifflin that evening.“I never thought I would ever be considered for something like this,” Mirialakis said.She was inducted into the West Virginia Wesleyan Athletic Hall of Fame in February.Mirialakis was captain of the Knoch girls basketball team her junior and senior seasons. She led the team in rebounds and averaged between 13 and 15 points per game.She became captain of the track team her senior year and won the WPIAL 100-meter hurdles championship in 1995. She also qualified for the WPIAL meet in the high jump.“It was an awesome honor to be considered a leader of the team,” Mirialakis said.She is looking forward to a reunion with one of her teammates in all three sports at Knoch — Hope McCorkle — at the Hall of Fame ceremony. McCorkle is being inducted as well.“I haven't been back to that high school since I graduated,” Mirialakis said. “It will be great to see Hope again and see so many others.”Mirialakis enjoyed a standout freshmnan athletic year at West Virginia Wesleyan. While she was recruited for volleyball, the track coach had interest in her as well.“I wasn't going to take on two sports at first, but then I decided to walk on for track,” she said. “I wound up going to the NCAA Division II Championships in the high jump.”Wesleyan's volleyball team won conference championships from 1995 through 1997. The volleyball team reached the Division II Elite 8 in her first year.Mirialakis was selected WVIAC Freshman Athlete of the Year.“Getting to nationals in track my first year and being on that Elite 8 volleyball team are probably the sports accomplishments I'm most proud of,” she said.Mirialakis wound up setting five West Virginia Wesleyan track and field records: The long jump, high jump, heptathlon, 4x100 meter relay and an indoor track relay. She still holds the school's records in the heptathlon and high jump.She was named Wesleyan's Track and Field Athlete of the Year in 1998.Mirialakis now works as a region manager for a supplement company in Austin, Texas.
