Bounce back for KC?

Gremlins will have to contain Brookville's pass

This is the last in a series of articles previewing this Friday’s Butler County area high school football games. The timing may not be right. The game is happening anyway.Karns City (0-1) travels to (1-0) Brookville for a 7 p.m. kickoff Friday, putting its inexperienced pass defense up against an offense that broke loose through the air last week.Freshman quarterback Jack Krug completed 25 of 37 passes for 372 yards and five touchdowns — the passing yardage marking a school record — in the Raiders’ 54-20 season-opening win over Warren. Karns City coughed up a pair of touchdown passes in its 41-14 loss at Armstrong.“Sure, it’s a concern,” KC coach Ed Conto said about containing Brookville’s passing attack. “Their coach (Scott Park) came from Dubois, where they threw the ball all over the place. And they’ve got some good receivers.“Each game, we just have to get better. We were in position to make plays defensively last week. We have to make tackles and finish. A lot of our guys had the jitters in our opener. Hopefully, we’re past that.”Bryan Dworek had 12 catches for 119 yards and three touchdowns last week for Brookville. the 12 catches marked a school record. Nick Keth added three catches for 96 yards and a score while Brandon McGranor had 18 carries for 102 yards and a touchdown. The Raiders generated 541 yards of offense in their opener. The Gremlins had a net 156 yards vs. Armstrong. Clay Garing scored the team’s only offensive TD on a 6-yard run.“They had a punt return and interception return for touchdowns back-to-back that rattled us a bit,” Conto said of Armstrong. “They were bigger and stronger than us up front. We’re not going to see that again.“We have to execute in the game. At some point, in game 2, 3, 4, whatever it is, what we do in practice has to translate on to the field in the game. Hopefully, that happens this week.”History is on the Gremlins’ side this week. Karns City owns a 22-8-2 edge in the all-time series between the teams, including a 47-0 win last season.Neshannock (1-0)at CWNC (0-1)7 p.m., Fridayat Stone FieldThe Trojans must improve defensively if they are to avoid a 0-2 start. In last week’s 55-21 loss to Quaker Valley, CWNC allowed 344 yards rushing, including 132 yards and three touchdowns to Quaker quarterback Ricky Guss.Trojan sophomore quarterback Zack Rocco threw for 180 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for another score.Neshannock opened the season with a 28-26 victory over District 10’s Farrell.CWNC and Neshannock are Midwestern Conference foes. The Lancers won last year’s meeting 36-0.Moniteau at St. Marys7 p.m., FridayThese two teams are very familiar with one another, having met three times in the last two seasons. In last season’s opener, Chance Nagy threw touchdowns on his first three varsity pass attempts, but the Flying Dutch rallied for a 26-25 win.St. Marys lost to the Warriors by a point in the 2015 regular season before defeating Moniteau in the District 9 playoffs, 17-6.This Warriors team will have a different look. Nagy will be at the controls of a hurry-up, spread offense.St. Marys, coming off a 6-4 season, lost a slew of playmakers on offense from a season ago to graduation.Clarion-Limestone (1-0)at Union/A-C Valley (0-1)7 p.m., Friday in FoxburgThe Falcon Knights will seek to rebound from a 50-22 loss to Imani Christian in Week 0.
