New-look SV opens on road

Raider football team headed for 1-0 Peters Twp. on Friday

This is one in a series of articles previewing this Friday's Butler County area high school football games. The second Ron Butschle era at Seneca Valley will officially get under way Friday night. The Raiders travel to Peters Township for a non-conference game that will kick off at 7:30 p.m.Butschle's first run as Raiders head coach lasted five seasons (2004-08). His squad prepped for 2017 in scrimmages against New Castle and Blackhawk.“We kept it pretty basic. I wanted to make sure we could execute the basic stuff on both sides of the ball,” he said. “We did some good things, but still have a lot of improvements to make.”Sophomore quarterback Gabe Lawson will make his first career start against the Indians after limited playing time as a freshman.“We pulled him up from ninth grade last year. We were looking to plant the seed for the future,” said Butschle. “He knows the offense. Now, it's just a matter of him accepting the leadership role, which he has done.”Lawson's timing with his receivers, including junior Luke Smith, senior Jake Bunofsky and junior tight end Jake Stebbins, received a headstart last year.“He's not just running plays out there. He gets the big picture,” Butschle added.Peters Township opened the season last week with a 45-13 win against Chartiers Valley.“We were up 12-0, made some mistakes and we go into halftime down 13-12,” said second-year Indians coach T.J. Plack. “Chartiers had all the advantage in the world at that point, but we came out and outscored them in the second half 33-0.”Plack is hoping for better results defensively from last year's 48-24 loss to SV at NexTier Stadium. In that contest, the Raiders scored six touchdowns in the first half, though most of the playmakers are now in college.“We brought in a whole new defense last year,” said Plack. “The kids now have a better understanding of what we're trying to do. We're just looking for more sound play, especially at the back end.”Tasked with protecting Lawson and opening holes for Noah Mancuso and the Raider ground game will be center Nolan Nagy, guards David Tkatch and Drew Robertson and tackles Evan Schillero and Tyler Proctor.Butschle sees a lot of his team's multi-faceted offense in Peters Township's scheme. The Indians return just two starters on offense, senior quarterback Jake Cortes being one of them.Cortes passed for nearly 1,000 yards last year, including 92 yards and a touchdown in the loss to Seneca Valley.“He's a leader on and off the field,” said Plack. “The other kids look up to him.”“He's got size (6-foot-4, 225 pounds) and can throw the ball really well,” Butschle said of Cortes, who will have an entirely new starting offensive line in front of him.“Seneca Valley will definitely have the size-advantage on us,” said Plack. “We struggled in pass protection last week until the second half.”
