Cadaver dogs signal alert at BC3

Butler County Community College

BUTLER TWP — Private cadaver dogs may have discovered something on the Butler County Community College campus.

The dogs were participating in a search-and-rescue training over the weekend and reportedly alerted handlers Saturday when approaching a mound of construction debris on the campus.

State police and Butler County Community College police are now investigating that wooded portion of the campus, according to Scott Richardson, BC3's director of campus police and security.

The area that attracted the canines was not part of the group's training grounds, Richardson said. The name of the organization is being withheld due to the investigation.

The canines, which were seeking certification or recertification as cadaver dogs, reacted positively Saturday evening, causing the handlers to alert the police.

There does not appear to be recent activity near the construction debris, Richardson said, who described the area as being dense with excessive vegetation overgrowth and having no adjacent walking trails. The investigation is focused on a remote area not near campus buildings or facilities, he said.

The front gate onto the campus was closed after evening activities as the investigation continued overnight.
