Board to fill post
BUFFALO TWP — The Freeport School Board is filling a vacant seat following the death of one of its members.
William Gaiser of South Buffalo Township died July 8, according to Dan Lucovich, school board president.
Lucovich said Gaiser, who was 78 in May, had health issues. There was no obituary.
Gaiser was in the fourth year of his second stint on the board.
“Bill was really a great board member,” Lucovich said.
Gaiser was a school bus driver for 27 years, transporting students in Freeport and Armstrong school districts.
“He was just a great all-around guy,” Lucovich said.
Gaiser also worked on chain saws and lawn mowers.
His mother was a teacher and his father worked for the district.
Gaiser, who lost his re-election bid in the spring primary, initially served on the board two terms ago.
The school board, which is accepting applications until Tuesday, will appoint his successor, who will serve through Dec. 5.
There will be no vacancies in 2018. There are four candidates — Lucovich, Christine Davies, Richard Hill and John Haven — running for four seats in the November election.
