A Beaver County man, charged with stealing an archery bow from a store and leading police on a chase, received a parole and probationary sentence in Butler County Court on Tuesday.

Mathew W. Carothers, 42, of Midland was sentenced to 30 days to 12 months in the Butler County Prison, with credit for time served, and he was immediately paroled. Following his parole, he also was sentenced to 36 months of county probation by county Judge William Shaffer.

He also was ordered to pay $999.99 in restitution.

Carothers previously pleaded guilty to felony fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement and misdemeanor retail theft.

He was initially charged with felony retail theft, fleeing and receiving stolen property, as well as misdemeanor retail theft, possession of an instrument of crime and summary traffic violations after the incident at the Field & Stream store at Cranberry Square off Route 19 on April 27, 2016.

Cranberry Township Police said Carothers stole a compound bow by cutting the security tag off the item and leaving the store before getting into a vehicle.

Officers immediately began chasing the vehicle from Old Freedom Road onto Freedom Road, which was congested with traffic, and police said Carothers' efforts to evade officers posed a danger to other motorists.

The one-mile chase ended on Thorn Hill Road, when the vehicle stopped in a parking lot. Officers reportedly found the stolen bow in his car.

He was placed in the Butler County Prison on $10,000 bail following arraignment, which was posted later that day.
