A series of upcoming workshops around the county will highlight gerrymandering and the issue of redistricting in Pennsylvania.

The Brennan Center for Justice, a nonpartisan think tank at the New York University Law School, recently reported that Pennsylvania is one of the three most gerrymandered states in the country, according to a news release from FairDistrictsPA, a coalition co-founded by the League of Women Voters and Common Cause that aims to ensure that elections in Pennsylvania reflect the will of the people.

Gerrymandering is the process of drawing the lines of legislative districts to create an advantage for one political party or group.

The group’s goal is to push state legislators to amend the state’s constitution so that a citizen’s commission would be in charge of redistricting, according to its website.

This would require the Legislature to pass a bill this year and then again during the next legislative session, which starts in January of 2019. If approved twice, the bill would go to a public vote in the 2020 general election.

From 5:30 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 17 at Cranberry Township Public Library, 2525 Rochester Road, Cranberry Township

From 10 a.m. to noon July 22 at Zelienople Public Library, 227 S. High St., Zelienople.
