CRANBERRY TWP — Residents may soon be able to avoid door-to-door solicitation through a new registry.

Cranberry is amending its solicitation ordinance to create a Do Not Knock registry that residents can sign up for yearly. This list will be given to vendors and peddlers who get a solicitation permit from the township police, said Jerry Andree, township manager.

It only applies to businesses and salespeople who are required to seek a permit, Andree said. It does not apply to people doing evangelistic work, nonprofit organizations, for those seeking signatures on petitions or for placing fliers on doors or mailbox flags.

“You can put up a no trespassing sign,” Andree said for residents to keep all unwanted visitors off their property.

The revision would also extend the soliciting hours from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Currently solicitation is permitted from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday. No soliciting is allowed on Sunday, state recognized holidays or on private property posted with no-solicitation signs.

Andree said the township was criticized by the sales industry for having hours that were too restrictive, so it expanded the time but also added the Do Not Knock registry.

“We have found other communities that have done that,” Andree said of the registry. “We're not the first.”

The amended ordinance will be considered for adoption at the July 27 supervisors meeting.
