Periodic lane closures are expected on Route 422 as crews begin work on constructing a north shore access to Moraine State Park this week.

The work, to improve access to Moraine State Park's North Shore in Muddy Creek and Worth townships is expected to be completed by the fall of 2018.

Deborah Casadei, public information officer for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, said no permanent lane closures will be needed for the duration of the projects, but drivers can expect periodic lane closures on Route 422 while the work is being completed.

“There will be period lane closures as they are preparing the project,” she said. “Most of the work will be completed offline, or not on the road, and there will be equipment moving and out of the area.”

Work on the project includes construction of a new loop ramp from Route 422 East to West Park Road, replacement of the exiting Route 8002 ramp with a new two-way road, extension of the left-turn lane from the Interstate-79/Route 422 interchange to I-79 North, installation of a traffic signal at the intersection of Route 422 and the I-79 south ramps, and other miscellaneous construction, according to a PennDOT press release.

This $4.46 million Route 422 Moraine Access project is being constructed by Gulisek Construction of Mount Pleasant.

Casadei said the project has been in the works for many years and will provide another access on the north shore of Moraine State Park.

She also urged drivers to slow down and use caution in the area.

Motorists can expect congestion and delays in high traffic volume periods, she said.

Fines are doubled for violations in work zones.
