Yoga on Main Street, a new business in downtown Butler, has applied for the city's tax abatement.

But that tax break has not yet been approved.

Yoga on Main Street will open in the basement of the same building that houses The Workingman's Store.

Heather Fahrenthold, who bought the building in February from ETWT Holdings, will run the yoga studio and teach yoga along with 10 other instructors.

Yoga on Main Street will offer regular yoga classes, hot yoga (with 90-degree temperatures), power yoga and restorative yoga.

“I just want to share my passion of yoga with others,” she said. “It's so good for your mind, your body, your soul.”

The city's tax abatement program that the company has applied for was amended in January 2013.

The current abatement allows for new or relocated businesses to be exempt from 100 percent of the mercantile tax for the first two years of operation. In the third year, they would be exempt from 16.5 percent of mercantile taxes.

In the fourth year, businesses would pay the tax in full.

Yoga on Main Street has also applied for a tax break given to Butler's new or relocated businesses. The companies are eligible to be exempt from paying a businesses privilege tax in their first two years.

In the third year, 82 percent of the payment is exempt, while in the fourth year 78.5 percent of the tax payment is exempt and 75 percent of payment is exempt in year five.

Business privilege taxes are due in full by the sixth year.

“We know and recognize that the business privilege tax is pretty high, and (council's) mission was to make it more attractive to businesses to come in,” said councilman Kenny Bonus. “Because those first few years are pretty sensitive whenever you're starting a business.”

Butler Downtown President Tom Graham is excited by the idea of Yoga on Main Street.“What is going to be more successful is our experiential types of shops,” he said. “These are the things that people actively participate in, and businesses become successful.”Yoga on Main Street is preparing for a grand opening July 8 that will include food, drinks, chair massages and mini-facials for women. A free yoga class will be held at 3 p.m. that day. Yoga on Main Street will include a day-care center for parents who bring their children to their workouts.“I'm actually getting a really good response,” Fahrenthold said of her new business. “A lot of people are excited about it. I think it's going to do really well. It's what Butler needs.”
