Butler Sting reaches semifinal
ERIE — The Butler County Sting 16U softball team fared well at the Battle of Lake Erie Tournament last weekend, reaching the semifinals.
In pool play Saturday, the team defeated Cranberry Chaos (12-2) and Amherst Lightning (6-5) before tying Hamburg Xtreme 3-3. The 2-0-1 record had the Sting seeded fourth out of 14 teams.
In bracket play, wins over the Jamestown Diamonds (10-2) and PA Renegades (10-1) sent the Sting to the semifinal round where they fell to the eventual champion New York Avalanche by a score of 6-5.
Butler’s offense was strong throughout the tournament, scoring 46 runs in six games. The barrage was led by Megan Hepler, Courtney Frye and Julia Gibson.
Ali Graham, Miah Ewing and Frye combined to give the team solid innings in the circle.
So far this season, the Sting have compiled a record of 17-4-2 in three tournaments.
