Knapp falls shy of 8th title
JOHNSTOWN — Former St. Jude Country Club member and five-time Butler Eagle Amateur champion Sean Knapp just missed securing his eighth West Penn Amateur golf title Tuesday at Sunnehanna Country Club.
Knapp had the lead with nine holes remaining in the 117th annual 54-hole event. But he scored a double-bogey on No. 10 and wound up bogeying No.’s 14 and 15.
After surrendering the lead to Matt Holuta and Chuck Nettles down the stretch, Knapp had a chance to force a three-way playoff. He missed a 15-foot birdie putt on No. 18, however.
Knapp shot 1-under-par for the tournament. Holuta, 21, of Indiana won the tournament on the third playoff hole. Holuta and Nettles, of Peters Township, shot 2-under-par in regulation.
Knapp last won the West Penn Amateur in 2003.
Holuta is a junior at Rutgers University. He won the playoff by sinking a par putt on No. 3. Nettles recorded a double-bogey on the hole.
