An alleged drunken driver on a dirt bike fled from Butler police before crashing and ending up in a hospital.

Police on Thursday charged 30-year-old Robert D. Wrobel of Franklin Township with being more than twice the legal limit for alcohol in connection with the June 13 incident.

He faces a list of criminal and traffic charges. District Judge William Fullerton issued an arrest warrant for Wrobel and a preliminary hearing has not been set.

Butler Township police were initially alerted at 12:09 a.m. to be on the lookout for an unidentified off-road motorcycle traveling without lights on Route 422 east.

Several minutes later, city police were called to assist when the vehicle was spotted turning onto Route 8, headed into Butler, according to court documents.

An officer saw the vehicle, identified as a Coolster 125cc dirt bike, turn westbound on West New Castle Street. Wrobel, who was driving without lights, refused to stop, police said.

He allegedly ran stop signs at North Washington, North Chestnut and Broad streets. When he turned onto Broad Street, police said, he traveled the wrong way.

The chase came to an abrupt end, documents said, when Wrobel turned eastbound onto West North Street and hit a curb, sending him off the crashing bike.

The defendant, who complained of neck pain, reeked of alcohol, police said. He was taken by ambulance to Butler Memorial Hospital for medical treatment.

Results of a blood test subsequently showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.181 percent, which is considered intoxicated under state law.

Wrobel is charged with driving under the influence, fleeing or attempting to elude police, driving without a license, driving an unregistered vehicle, driving a vehicle without valid inspection, driving a vehicle without insurance, driving a motorcycle without proper head gear and eye protection, and driving without headlights and taillights.
