A working smoke detector may have saved more than an elderly Butler woman’s bacon.

The woman was at her home in the 800 block of East Brady Street frying up a pork chop shortly before 5 p.m. when she decided to take a shower, authorities said.

She apparently forgot about the food on the stove. Little did he know, the house began filling up with smoke while she showered.

“She heard the smoke detector and got out of the shower,” said Capt. Ted Codispot of the Butler Fire Department.

The careless cooker, whose name was not immediately available, took the frying pan off the stove and walked it outside. She was not injured.

“It really filled the house with smoke,” Codispot said.

Firefighters remained on scene for about 30 minutes to ventilate the house, which apparently did not sustain any damage.
