Sting softball team wins state tourney
The Butler County Sting 16U softball team won the National Softball Association state tournament in Canonsburg last weekend.
The Sting overcame a 5-4 loss to the Pittsburgh Power early in the tournament, winning six straight games to claim the title.
Victories against the Lady Bulldogs (6-3), Thunder Fastpitch (5-1) and Fayette Fusion (6-4) sent the Sting to the championship bracket, where they continued to roll.
An 11-3 quarterfinal win over Power Extreme was followed by an 8-5 semifinal victory against the Pittsburgh Power, sending the Sting to the title game.
The impressive run was capped with an 11-6 win over the Predators on Sunday.
The Sting’s pitching staff of Miah Ewing, Ali Graham, Shelby Barnett and Courtney Frye was outstanding during the tournament.
Graham and Ewing both hit home runs. Also starring at the plate were Julia Gibson, Madison Titus and Megan Hepler.
Alyssa Stitt, Brittney Friters and Faith Hansotte played especially well on defense.
The team was coached by Scott Pierce, Brad McDonald and Emily McDonald.
