A Butler High School senior, Emily Sespico, was selected as recipient of the 35th annual Theodore K. Vogeley Scholarship.

She was chosen from 39 applicants, 20 of whom were interviewed. The scholarship will cover full tuition, room and board, books and student fees.

She is the daughter of Matthew and Stacie Sespico. Emily will attend Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh to major in chemistry.

The number of Vogeley recipients varies each year due to interest earned on the trust and the costs of the students' colleges or universities.

Due to the availability of remaining funds, three other students will receive a four-year fixed-amount scholarship and five students will receive one-time grants.

The recipients of the four-year fixed-amount scholarships are: Jessica Bishop, $5,000 for four years for a total of $20,000; Nathan Callithen, $5,000 for four years for a total of $20,000: and Jefferson Ford $10,000 for four years for a total of $40,000.

The recipients of the one-time grants are: Joseph Deemer, $4,000; Kylee McLafferty, $4,000; Emily Pellegrino, $4,000; Taylor Weaver, $4,000; and Benjamin Wong, $4,000.

A committee of three is responsible for selecting the recipients. The committee includes John Wyllie, Jr., high school principal; William Robinson, Jr., Butler attorney; and Brittany Zucco, high school counselor.

Emily is the daughter of Matthew and Stacie Sespico of Butler. She is a member of mock trial, student council, the marching band and the environmental club. She won the Best Advocate and Paul Kelly awards and a Butler Kiwanis scholarship. She plans to attend Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh as a chemistry major.

Jessica is the daughter of Scott and Lori Bishop of Butler. She is a member of the track and field team, the Sequinette dance team, the engineering club and the National Honor Society. She won the Shelly Portman Outstanding Sequinette Award and the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Sciences special award for mathematics. She plans to attend Georgia Tech in Atlanta as a computer science major.

Nathan is the son of Harry and Holly Callithen of Butler. He is a member of the swim team, National Honor Society and the Hometown High Q team. He plans to attend Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland as a biomedical engineering major.

Jefferson is the son of Douglas and Mary Ford of Bulter. He is a member of the National Honor Society, the student council, the varsity basketball and baseball teams, the Hometown High Q team and the ultimate Frisbee team. He won a Spanish club scholarship, was a National Merit Scholar, an Advanced Placement Scholar with Honor and Harvard Book awardee and was president of the Class of 2017. He plans to attend Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and major in international business.

Joseph is the son of Robert and Kelly Deemer of Connoquenessing. He was captain of the varsity swimming and diving team and a member of the National Honor Society and the varsity track and field team. He plans to attend Shippensburg University majoring in marketing and communications.

Kylee is the daughter of Robert and Karen McLafferty of Butler. She was a member of the Sequinette flag team and the Pennsylvania Math League. She was a recipient of the Kathleen Bachman, Mildred Whisner and Colbie Regis Lovich memorial scholarships. She plans to attend Grove City College and major in elementary education.

Emily is the daughter of Monica and Richard Pellegrino of Butler. She is a member of the National Honor Society, student council and the varsity lacrosse team and is president of the photography club. She plans to attend the University of Utah in Salt Lake City as a premedicine major.

Taylor is the daughter of Amy Judy of Butler and Robert Weaver of Pittsburgh. She is a member of the indoor track team, the outdoor track team and the cheerleading squad. She plans to attend Saint Francis University and major in occupational therapy.

Benjamin is the son of Earl and Lisa Wong of Renfrew. He was vice president of the Class of 2017, a member of the Butler Area, Pennsylvania and National Junior Classical Leagues and the marching band. He won the Golden Tornado Scholastic Foundation Award. He plans to attend the University of Pittsburgh as a biomedical engineering major.
