BUTLER TWP — A man was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital following a two-vehicle accident around 11 a.m. Friday at the intersection of Route 8 and Cooledge Street, according to South Butler Fire Department personnel.

Samuel Baumgarten, 25, of Valencia was turning left onto Route 8 South when his blue Ford sedan collided with a Jeep Wrangler heading north on Route 8.

The man suffered severe lower-body injuries. Firefighters had to cut the left front and rear doors off the Ford to reach the man. He was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital by Butler Ambulance Service, and from there he was flown by helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital.

Sarah Hunter, 20, of Chicora was driving the Jeep at the time of the collision. She suffered minor injuries and was transported by Butler Ambulance Service to Butler Memorial Hospital.

The Ford sustained severe left-side damage, and its airbags were deployed. The Jeep sustained disabling front-end damage. Both vehicles were towed.

Butler Ambulance Service, South Butler Fire Department, Butler Township Fire District 3, Butler City Fire Department and Butler Township police were on the scene.

Route 8 was limited to one-lane of traffic for about 45 minutes following the accident until the wreckage was cleared.

Baumgarten was cited with duties at stop signs and vehicle turning left.
