An Allison Park man charged with threatening family members and assaulting a police officer was sentenced to probation in Butler County Court on Thursday.

Kent C. Bowers, 67, was sentenced to two years' probation and 50 hours of community service by county Judge Timothy McCune. He also must pay a $100 fine and undergo any recommended counseling.

McCune also ordered that his probation could be transferred to Allegheny County, where he lives.

Bowers pleaded guilty to misdemeanor terroristic threats on May 10 after initially being charged with felony aggravated assault, misdemeanor simple assault, four counts of terroristic threats and four counts of harassment after an incident in Lancaster Township on Oct. 6.

Bowers addressed the court during the proceeding, telling McCune that this was a “one-time incident” and was related to his alcohol use and post-traumatic stress disorder from his Vietnam service that has gone untreated for many years.

Public defender Maura Palumbi, who was standing in for public defender Charles Nedz, said Bowers has sought treatment for his issues, including a four-month stay in an inpatient facility in Bath, N.Y.

“He is working on addressing some of those underlying issues,” she said.

Before imposing sentence, McCune wished Bowers luck, saying he read the victim impact statements submitted from Bowers' wife and daughter and, “with the damage you caused your family, hopefully you can reconcile with these people.”

Officers from the state police, Lancaster Township, Zelienople and Jackson Township police departments were called to Bowers' house on Scott Ridge Road around noon Oct. 6 for a report of a domestic disturbance, according to the criminal complaint.

There, Bower's wife reported that he had grabbed her by her shirt collar and threatened to kill her, as well as other family members at the house and his therapist. He allegedly was intoxicated and had a scalpel.

Bowers had barricaded himself in the bedroom of the home and told police that when he was released from custody he “will finish what he set out to do,” according to the complaint.

During his arrest he allegedly wrapped his legs around the legs of one of the officers and grabbed him by his vest in an attempt to tackle him.
