[naviga:h3]2012 Jeep Liberty air bag system probed[/naviga:h3]

DETROIT — The U.S. government is investigating complaints that air bag control computers in some Jeep Liberty SUVs can fail, preventing the air bag system from operating properly in a crash.

The probe covers about 105,000 of the vehicles from the 2012 model year.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in documents posted today that it has received 44 complaints about the problem involving a computer that detects crashes and controls air bag deployment. No related injuries have been reported.

Many drivers told the agency that an air bag warning light came on. In some cases the problem was corrected by replacing the computer, while others kept driving their SUVs with the light on.

NHTSA said in the documents that complaints appear to be less frequent in the vehicles from model years before 2012, which was the last year the SUV was built.

DETROIT — Forecasts for U.S. economic growth are coming in slightly lower after a weak first quarter.

The National Association for Business Economists said in a survey released today that it’s expecting gross domestic product growth of 2.2 percent this year and 2.4 percent in 2018. Those forecasts are down 0.1 percentage points from a survey in March.

The gross domestic product — the broadest gauge of the economy — expanded in the January-March quarter at a 1.2 percent annual rate. That was better than initially forecast, but still weak. Unseasonably warm weather was one reason for the slow growth, since it limited spending on utilities.
