SRU names interim president to lead during search
SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University's chief academic officer has been tapped to lead the school on an interim basis after current SRU President Cheryl Norton retires July 21.
Provost and vice president for academic and student affairs Philip K. Way was appointed Wednesday as SRU's interim president effective July 21 by the Board of Governors of Pennsylvania's State System of Higher Education. Way, who has served in his current position for four years, will assume all the responsibilities and authority as a permanent president.
“We are confident that he will provide (SRU) steady leadership while the search for the university's next president continues,” said Cynthia K. Shapira, board chairman.
Way, who joined SRU in 2013, had previously worked at the University of Alabama at Birmingham as well as the University of Cincinnati.
The school expects the search for a new president to take several months.
SRU spokesman Robb King said the university announced Tuesday that it's national advertising campaign soliciting candidates to succeed Norton will begin June 15 and run through Aug. 15. The university anticipates Norton's permanent successor will take office sometime in January.
