Mars' graduate White earns prestigious award

White

GROVE CITY — Jordyn White heard her name announced and couldn't believe it.

“I was absolutely in shock, I think,” said White, a senior on the women's soccer team at Grove City College and a Mars graduate. “My heart was racing.”

White's name was announced as the Grove City College Sportswoman of the Year at a banquet Thursday night.

It was a culmination of a standout four-year career for White, both on the soccer pitch and ioff of it.

“It's truly an honor,” she said. “Very humbling. This is a testament to God's grace.”

White was one of 10 nominees for the award, along with woman's basketball player Lexie Arkwright, cross country runner Lydia Keiper, golfer Leah Wilson, softball player Aimee Wootton, swimmer Anne Shirley Dassow, tennis player Maggie Manchester, track athlete Rachel Watson, volleyball player Lexie Schwartz and water polo player Abby Jank.

The Sportswoman of the Year award has been given out by the college since 1982.

“Honestly, I felt honored to be nominated with so many other great women and athletes up for the award,” White said.

White was a four-year letterwinner for the Wolverines as a center-back and Grove City's all-time leader in matches played with 90.

She made first-team All-Presidents' Athletic Conference three times and was named to the All-ECAC South and All-Great Lakes Region teams twice.

White had nine goals and 20 assists in her career.

The Wolverines had one of the most successful seasons in school history this fall, winning a program-record 17 games and advancing to the PAC championship match, a 1-0 loss to Thomas More.

Grove City made it to the third round of the ECAC Division III tournament before being ousted.

Grove City was 50-32-8 in White's four years at the school.

What she will remember most, however, was many of the things she experienced off the pitch.

“I think one of the biggest things about my four years here was the relationships I formed, not only with my team and coaches, but with other athletes playing with the common purpose of glorifying the Lord,” she said.

White attended the spring soccer game and said it was a strange experience.

“It was so weird watching them, but it was also a cool place to be,” White said. “I realized I can support the team in a different way.”

White, who will graduate later this month with a business management degree, already has the next faze of her soccer life in hand.

White will be an assistant girls soccer coach at Mars in the fall under her high school coach, Blair Gerlach.

“I'm really excited about that,” White said. “I hope to be a mentor to the girls as a female coach.”

It hasn't sunk in to White yet, however, that a rather long chapter of her life is about to end.

“I thought high school flew by, but I think college went by even faster,” White said, laughing. “I really excited about doors opening and entering the next phase of my life. It hasn't fully hit me yet.”
