CWNC's Breen joining Nittany Lions
CRANBERRY TWP — Finding the right college fit for a student athlete can be easy.
For Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic senior basketball star forward Sam Breen, however, the choice proved to be more complex than she was hoping for.
She originally signed with the University of Dayton, but backed out of that commitment in early April, saying at the time, “Something in my mind told me I committed too early.”
Breen, who was recently chosen as Pennsylvania's Class 4A Girls Basketball Player of the Year, is hoping the second time's a charm. She announced on Monday that she will be accepting an offer to continue her academic and athletic career at Penn State University.
Her decision will be made official this week when she signs, but that is a mere formality.
“I tweeted my release from Dayton (April 7),” said Breen. “Penn State saw that and they started to follow me on Twitter. That's how I knew they were interested in me. That's how things go these days.”
Though Penn State was not in on the original round of recruiting Breen, it made a good case following her release from Dayton.
“It came down to Penn State and Virginia Tech,” said Breen. “It was a hard decision because I liked both schools and both coaching staffs. I visited Penn State the day after Easter and just really liked the campus. Overall, I felt it was a better fit for me.”
Penn State is under the direction of head coach Coquese Washington, who will begin her 11th season of leading the Lady Lions next fall. She has a record of 181-135 at the school, including 21-11 last season.
Breen ended her scholastic career as CWNC's all-time leading scorer with 2,443 points. She led the Trojanettes to a state championship in 2016 and a WPIAL crown this year. But she knows playing basketball in the Big Ten Conference will bring with it a brand new challenge.
“All I can ask for is playing time,” she said. “I want to do everything to prove that I can play at that level.”
