BC3 trustees OK contracts for child learning center
BUTLER TWP — Trustees of Butler County Community College unanimously approved contracts with five companies that will perform work during the renovation of the school’s Children’s Creative Learning Center this summer.
The contracts — with DiMarco Construction of Clairton, Advanced Plumbing & Mechanical of Aliquippa, Wm. T. Spaeder of Erie, Penn-Ohio Electric of Masury, Ohio, and Reno Brothers of New Brighton — range from a $1.3 million award to DiMarco, the project’s general contractor, to a $78,900 contract with Wm. T Spaeder for fire protection.
The $2.2 million project is expected to break ground June 1, said BC3 President Nick Neupauer, with a “very aggressive” timeline that has college officials saying work will be completed by the end of 2017.
The center is a state-licensed preschool and day care facility that serves BC3 students, staff and members of the community. It moved from its previous location at Armstrong Lodge in 2010, and now also provides services for several BC3 student programs, including early childhood education and nursing.
The board’s approval of the contracts Wednesday comes two days after Butler Township commissioners approved the college’s land use plan. According to those documents, the school plans to tear down the current CCLC, which is housed in a 2,400-square-foot building, and replace it with a 6,500-square-foot building that expands common areas and connects with two surrounding buildings at BC3’s main campus.
The resulting building will be about 25,000 square feet, college officials said. The project is being paid for in part by a $1 million donation from John L. Wise III and family. Wise, who is vice president and treasurer of the Butler Eagle, made the donation last year in memory of his sister, Amy Wise, who was a teacher.
In March trustees approved a contract with DPH Architecture, a Canfield, Ohio-based engineering firm, to oversee the project.
