Butler girls track passes early test
WEXFORD — Four meets in eight days was just what Alexis Leech needed to get into midseason form.
In mid-April.
“It gets exhausting,” Leech said shortly after running the anchor leg of Butler’s winning 1,600-meter relay performance. “But it helps a lot. It makes you get a lot better because of all the competition, whereas indoor it’s just once a week.”
The Butler girls track and field team handled the workload well over the last eight days, winning again, 90-60, over North Allegheny Tuesday afternoon.
Leech had a part of four event wins. She won the 400-meter run with a time of 56.32 seconds. She’s within a whisker of Annessa Schnur Steele’s 19-year-old school record in that event.
But Leech was most proud of her effort in the 3,200-meter relay.
“In the 4x8, it was the third time I ran it and I ran 13 seconds faster than I did the last time,” Leech said. “I was pretty happy with that.”
Leech was looking forward to squaring off against North Allegheny.
The Tigers posed a good challenge to the Golden Tornado.
Challenge accepted. Challenge met.
“I think we all knew NA was going to be big competition to us all season, so we knew what we needed to do at this meet,” Leech said. “We all did what we needed to do to win.”
Leech, who also won the 200, wasn’t the only star for Butler.
Liz Simms won the 800 and was also on the winning 1,600 and 3,200 relays. Jena Reinheimer captured the shot put and discus and Maddie Tioni helped Butler sweep the 400.
Butler also swept the high jump with freshman Kylee Lewandowski placing first.
“We do have depth,” said Butler girls track and field coach John Williams. “We have some kids who are No. 2 or 3 on our team that would be No. 1s on other teams.”
Williams was also excited for this showdown with the Tigers.
“These are the kids of meets we love because we know we have to compete in 18 events,” Williams said. “They bring it and we bring it.”
Butler is hoping to bring it — and win it — this season.
After finishing second in the WPIAL team competition last year, the Golden Tornado have their sights set on winning it this year.
“We lost by 10 points to Hempfield last year,” Williams said. “It’s a great feat to get to that final meet, but we want to end up on top. A lot of our core group was there last year and it was hard to get so close and come up short. They want to make it happen.”

North Allegheny had speed on it side — namely Aiden Owens, who won four events.
It allowed the Tigers to race to the victory.
“They just had a little too much speed on the track,” said Butler boys track and field coach Rick Schontz.
There were some good things for the Golden Tornado, however, in the loss.
Noah Beveridge won the 1,600 and the 800, Colton Frost claimed the win in the shot put, Steve Beichner won the discus and Dom Schmidt was victorious in the high jump.
The Butler 3,200 relay team also got a victory.
“This is what it’s all about and they’ve been working hard and they competed hard,” Schontz said. “They did some really good things.”
