Auto maintenance is important after winter
Springtime for drivers means bringing their convertibles out of the garage and putting the windows down.
However, spring can also inspection season, and experts say drivers should check a few things on their vehicles before bringing them into the shop.
“Don't wait until the last second to get your car inspected,” said Al Martin, foreman at Bowers Garage in Zelienople. “You can actually have a 15-month state inspection if you get your car inspected three months in advance.”
Experts say salt residue can hasten rusting in various parts of your vehicle. Ways to prevent this from happening and better preserve your vehicle include applying an undercoating or washing your vehicle's undercarriage.
“Their rocker panels and the bottom of the doors rot out,” said Martin. “The front radiator supports are notorious for rotting out in Pennsylvania.”
Martin also said rear bumper face bars and steel brake lines also can deteriorate.
Rusted vehicle parts will lead to failed inspections.
Batteries and battery terminals also should be checked for corrosion.
“Most batteries are decent and maintenance-free,” Martin said. “The biggest thing is to check your battery before winter. A battery's life is usually about three years.”
Studded winter tires should be removed before Saturday, per state law.
Fines and tickets are issued to those who violate state law. Current laws were enacted in 1983 after concerns arose about winter tires causing damage to roads.
Martin said a vehicle's handling also will feel different with winter tires on regular roads.
“The car won't handle as well,” Martin said. “They'll feel looser on the road. They won't stick like usual.”
Martin said automotive lights also should be checked.
“When spring comes, you get this hot-and-cold weather,” he said. “It will knock your filaments out of your light bulbs. A lot of people don't know they have burned out lights in the back.”
Along with potentially causing safety hazards, people also can be fined and ticketed for having burned out lights.
